Mark & Cath Posted March 20, 2009 Report Posted March 20, 2009 We have a 2001 galaxy that has been off the road for 6 months with a damaged clutch. The clutch, flywheel and slave are now done and to make sure we gave it a new timing belt kit as well, costing us just short of a grand in all. The problem now is the engine is smoking, it never ever had a problem before and I need some advice. The issue I see are: 1) Oil. This was changed 3 weeks before the clutch failed, should it still be OK?2) Timing from the cambelt change. The mechanic says he didn't touch the 3 camshaft sproket bolts because the pin went in fine after the belt change. Is this possible and can I check the timing using my VAG.COM software.3) Is it possible the Turbo seals have failed because it has been standing so long? Any advice or pointers would be so very gratefully received. Thanks for reading Quote
familyman Posted March 20, 2009 Report Posted March 20, 2009 How badly is it smoking? if the turbo seals have gone you should get a proper smoke screen!+ very poor performance ., Is the oil level ok,not overfilled? as that might be forcing oil into the cylinders, passing the piston rings . What sort of mileage has it done? could be just a knackered engine! Quote
sepulchrave Posted March 20, 2009 Report Posted March 20, 2009 It is probably blowing by the rings due to mild rust formation on the bores over the last six months, possibly the rings are gummed up a bit too. Give it a good hard spank up the motorway, take the family to the seaside or something then see if it still smokes when you get back. ...or the engine might be knackered for absolutely no reason. :angry2: Quote
Mark & Cath Posted March 20, 2009 Author Report Posted March 20, 2009 There is no smoke screen, the performance is fine and the turbo also has its usual background whistle. It has done 103k with a full service history behind it. It is driving lovely and smooth and apart from the slight smoking the only thing I can fault is the top end rattle is a little louder than I remember it being but then the VW PD engine always was a bit rattley. In light of any other thoughts I think the best thing I can do is drive her gentle for a few days to run the rings and everything back in, hopefully it with settle down. HOPEFULLY :-) Thanks for the replies lads. Quote
Richard gal Posted March 21, 2009 Report Posted March 21, 2009 Having recently done a cambelt i think its been done wrong, it will run but may be slightly out of timing, the camshaft should be slackened and rotated back until the belt is fitted and the new tensioner set, then tighten. Once fitted you then rotate the crank 2 revolutions, lock the crank again and check the drill/pin still goes in. Quote
Nigel-in-oxford Posted April 2, 2009 Report Posted April 2, 2009 Just got an 05 Galaxy 1.9tdiI am getting a little blue smoke when I start the engine, but this goes once the engine warms up. Its got 60K on the clock and runs perfectly.Any ideas? Quote
Mark & Cath Posted May 14, 2009 Author Report Posted May 14, 2009 Mine was down to the fact it had been standing so long, I ran it on a 200 mile motorway cruise (low oil half way back GULP). The next morning I gave it some fresh castrol and a filter and she has been good as gold since. As for smoking mine does it now and then at start up but if it doesn't use engine oil I wouldn't worry about it. Quote
